Don’t Fail to Receive God’s Love Because You’re Unworthy
God’s love for you is not dependent on your actions; rather, God loves you because of His goodness. So don’t brush off God’s love because you’re unworthy.
…God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. – Romans 5:8 ESV
No person, other than Jesus, has ever been worthy of God’s love. Even Mother Teresa, famously known for a lifetime of good deeds and true devotion to God, was unworthy of God’s love. We, humans, are all born with a sinful nature, and we all are undeserving of God’s love.
…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God… -Romans 3:23
You reap what you sow.
Hard workers are rewarded with a raise, and slackers miss opportunities. Consistently saying “no” to unhealthy calorie-laden foods and “yes” to healthier alternatives, a disciplined eater’s waistline displays the proof. Wise money managers enjoy the fruits of retirement while the indulgent spender pays dearly in the end. Every day we encounter real evidence that our behavior causes specific results. Naturally, it makes sense that we would extend this reasoning to spiritual things. After all, the Bible teaches that you reap what you sow.
God doesn’t give you what you deserve.
Yes, there are consequences for your behavior in life, but that has no effect on who God is. God is good and unchanging regardless of your behavior.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. -Isaiah 55:8-9
God is the source of all love, grace, and mercy, and only He is righteous. Consequently, God doesn’t change His character, to include His love for you, when you change your behavior.
God loves you more than you could ever imagine.
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!… – 1 John 3:1 NIV
Once this truth settles into your heart, it can be quite liberating. This truth does not provide an unlimited license to do whatever your flesh desires; as we know, there are consequences for behavior. However, understanding this character trait of God begins to reveal to you the magnitude of God’s great love for you, and rejecting God’s love for you because you’re unworthy will no longer make sense.
God will never love you any more or any less than He does at this moment.
His love for you is unconditional and unending. Period. No matter what.
